Mason Greenwood had an impressive debut for Marseille, scoring a brace and even netting a penalty with his non-dominant foot.
It took just 3 minutes for Greenwood to make his mark in the opening match of the Ligue 1 2024/25 season against Brest. He received the ball on the right wing, easily bypassed the opposing defense, and finished with his left foot to open the scoring for Marseille.
Later, Greenwood doubled the lead from the penalty spot. While many players would choose to use their dominant foot for such crucial moments, Greenwood surprised many by opting to shoot with his right foot.
The reason Greenwood chose to take the penalty with his right foot, despite being left-footed, has an interesting backstory. In a 2019 interview, Greenwood explained the unusual choice: “I prefer my left foot slightly more than my right,” he said. “But it all started when I was playing for the U13s. I missed a penalty with my left foot in a tough match against Man City, and since then, I’ve only used my right foot for penalties.”
Moving to Marseille marks a new chapter in Greenwood’s career, one he hopes will be defined by on-field success. His debut performance against Brest shows that Greenwood is ready to seize the opportunity and make a difference in Ligue 1.
