Former Chelsea star John Obi Mikel remained composed after Nicolas Jackson’s angry reaction to his previous criticism.
Following Chelsea’s 0-2 loss to Man City in the opening match of the 2024/25 Premier League season, Obi Mikel commented on Jackson: “You need a striker who knows how to put the ball in the net, which is something we currently lack. I understand if it seems like I’m being disrespectful, but that’s not my intention. Chelsea needs a top-class striker like Haaland, who scored 91 goals for Man City.”
After scoring and providing an assist in Chelsea’s 6-2 victory over Wolves on Sunday, Jackson responded with a curt: “Shut up.”
In response to Jackson’s action, Obi Mikel maintained his stance: “He’s scored goals, and I genuinely like Jackson. I’m not saying he’s a bad player. I’m just pointing out that his finishing ability needs improvement. He’s still young and needs an experienced striker to help him develop.”
Obi Mikel added: “He’s showing progress every week, moving into good positions. His finishing isn’t quite there yet. That’s all I’ve said. If he scores regularly and tells me to be quiet, I’ll accept that.”
Jackson scored 14 goals in the Premier League during his debut season for Chelsea last year, but fans expect more from the striker. For Chelsea to compete for titles, they will need many goals from Jackson and his teammates. It remains to be seen whether Jackson will continue to lead Chelsea’s attack, especially as the club is linked with Victor Osimhen of Napoli.
